This North American native is a member of the mint family noted for typical square stems and fragrant leaves, which smell more like black licorice than mint. The purple flower stalks form whorls and are valued for attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Growing guide
- Sowing
Plant seeds 4–6” apart outside in a sunny location in very early spring. Do not cover seed with soil; they require light to germinate. Press the seed gently into the soil and water well.
- Thinning
When plants are 3” tall, thin or transplant, allowing 15–18” between each plant.
- Germination
Seed often requires stratification (exposure to cold temperatures) first to break their dormancy. Expect germination in 7–14 days after the soil begins to warm.
- Remarks
Mature plants are drought & shade tolerant, and somewhat deer resistant. Leaves make a wonderful tea and the flowers are edible.
