Growing guide
- Sowing
Sow seeds outdoors as early as the ground can be worked. Plant in rows 12–15 inches apart, spacing seeds ½ inch apart in the row. Cover seed with ¼ inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until plants grow.
- Thinning
When plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin to 2 to 3 inches apart.
- Germination
Carrot is very slow to germinate, requiring up to 3 to 4 weeks depending on soil and weather conditions.
- Remarks
Some gardeners like to soak the seed a few hours before planting to aid germination. Make successive sowings up to mid-July for full-sized roots for winter storage. Plant radish seeds in the row; they will mature and can be harvested before the carrots get too large.
