Cucumber Mexican Sour Gherkin

Also called Mouse Melons, cucamelon fruits are native to Central America and Mexico since pre-Columbian times. They look like tiny watermelons and grow on vigorous vining plants. Fruits are about one inch long, crunchy, with a cucumber-like, slightly tangy sour flavor. Great for pickling, eating raw, or adding to salads and stir-fries.

Growing guide
- Sowing
Start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before last frost or direct sow outdoors after frost danger has passed. Sow 3–4 seeds about 1 inch deep in mounded soil (called a hill). Space hills about 1 foot apart. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil. Use a tall trellis to support sprawling vines.
- Thinning
When plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin to leave 3 or 4 strongest plants.
- Germination
Germinates in 10 to 14 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
- Remarks
Harvest frequently; fruit should be no more than 1 inch for best taste. Frequent harvesting encourages more fruit production.
