Growing guide

Sowing

Sow seed outdoors as early as the ground can be worked. Plant in rows 15 inches apart, spacing seeds ½ inch apart in the row. Cover seed with ¼ inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until plants start to grow.

Thinning

When plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin to 4 or 5 inches apart.

Germination

Parsley is very slow to germinate, requiring 3 to 4 weeks depending on soil and weather conditions. It sometimes fails entirely if planted during a particularly dry period.

Remarks

Some gardeners like to soak the seed a few hours before planting to aid germination. Parsley is a host plant for the caterpillars of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly. Plant extra to share with them.
