Most attractive during late summer and early fall, it offers a fine display of brilliant color until frost. It is the only sage with red flowers that is native to the United States.

Growing guide
- Sowing
Plant seed outdoors after all danger of frost is past. Plant in rows 12 inches apart, spacing seeds 1 inch apart in the row. Cover with 1/8 inch of fine soil, well pressed down. Keep soil moist until plants start to grow.
- Thinning
When plants are 1 to 2 inches tall, thin or transplant, spacing plants 12 inches apart.
- Germination
Germinates in 10 to 15 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
- Remarks
Scarlet Sage prefers a sunny, well-drained location but will tolerate partial shade and can withstand heat. Periodically trim and deadhead to keep plant bushy. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
