Growing guide
- Sowing
Direct sow in early spring. This pea is a cool-season vegetable and can tolerate light frosts, even when the plants are small. Plant seeds 1 to 1½ inches deep and 1 to 2 inches apart in rows 18 to 24 inches apart. Keep soil moist but not wet. As vines grow, support with a stake or trellis at least 5 feet tall.
- Thinning
When plants are 2 to 3 inches tall, thin to 4 to 6 inches apart.
- Germination
7 to 14 days depending on soil and weather conditions.
- Remarks
For snow peas, pick before the peas start to enlarge. For shell peas, if the pea pod is round and bright green, it’s time to pick.
